Be Water, Be Glue

about

It’s very old hat at this point to highlight as special or unique that a collaboration has occurred because of the internet. I first remember seeing something marketed as such when I discovered Foreign Exchange’s music via the Ecko clothing website of all places. Some variation of, “They did it all through text messaging and email!” Wild stuff circa 2004 to be sure, and boy did they deliver. And I guess for the children of the last true, “You just had to be there,” generation, how could it not be mind blowing that artists could catch a vibe, zip file said vibe and click send to someone half way around the globe so that they could then do the same thing until both were good with it.

Wow.

I’ll spare further letters and hyperbole on contrasting then with now only because what else needs to be said on the subject? I assume you know the ease with which you can stay connected to people at this point and if you don’t, please stay under the rock you’ve been living under. It’s much safer and happier there! However, I will say a thing or 2 about my most recent collaboration with Portland based producer goldenbeets.

We’ve been going back and forth over our song “Be Water, Be Glue” for about a year and we FINALLY have it wrapped up and ready to go. What I’ve appreciated most is the shared desire throughout our time making this to chase after the joyous reasons that made us want to record our music in the first place! It also didn’t hurt to be able to hear or even see what another side of the country was looking like. Typically, I would’ve bought a few trips worth of plane tickets to Portland already to vibe out but that just wasn’t going to happen given *gestures at the last 15 months*.

If there’s an obvious gist or message to it, put succinctly and with GREAT feeling - Be water! Be glue!

Get it?

lyrics

Who snuck this mid into this bouquet?
I was great til I sparked up, now I turn that page
It's the little things that get me up
I was great til I parked, I need motion to wave
I'm an emotional mess, bless
Placid
Try not to do nothing drastic
Stick to the classics
Nobody move, nobody get's drilled
No losses, I'm thrilled
No motion, I'm grilled
Pan seared brill
Skin popping like braille
Goose stepping outside
Who's stepping outside?
Be water, be glue!
Sticky in the right ways
Itchy fingers all day
Only got a little time
Before it all goes away
All goes away

Optimistic nihilist
Blame the stylist
It's all made up
Can you sit with your silences?
Can you sit with your silences?
Can you sit with yourself in silence?
2 x

Death before dishonor
Your honor
I honor institutes that aren't morally destitute
Short list
Death before dishonor
The order, I'll skip the platitudes
And talking loud in absolutes
No shit
It's no kidding, no grinning
In the late innings
If there aren't winnings to be had
Damn, sad
No slipping
Forgiving what I could
I'll take the rest to the slab

Optimistic nihilist
Blame the stylist
It's all made up
Can you sit with your silences?
Can you sit with your silences?
Can you sit with yourself in silence?
2 x
